FBLA Members Raise Money for Wounded Warriors

February 10, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Future Business Leaders of America members from Sewanhaka Central High School District raised more than $1,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project at their first-ever FBLA District Volleyball Tournament.
Sewanhaka High School FBLA President JP Iacona said this was the first time FBLA members from schools in the district joined together in their fundraising efforts.
“We wanted to become more unified and hoped that we would raise more money for the organization collectively,” Iacona said.
Students from Floral Park Memorial, H. Frank Carey, New Hyde Park Memorial and Sewanhaka high schools competed in the volleyball tournament. Most of the students wore “Aces for America” T-shirts, which were designed by FBLA members to represent the volleyball term “aces” and the United States. Participants paid a fee to play volleyball. They also collected donations and sold tickets, refreshments and raffle tickets to raise funds for the organization.

Seawolves celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day

February 5, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Stony Brook, N.Y. – Stony Brook student-athletes and children from the local community took part in a National Girls and Women in Sports Day event in Pritchard Gymnasium prior to Saturday’s women’s basketball game against Vermont.

The event marked the 30th anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sports Day, as Seawolves student-athletes hosted an annual all-sports clinic for children ages 6-13, with over 100 participants in the pregame event. Participants received a t-shirt to wear during the event and to the women’s basketball team’s 73-59 victory over Vermont later in the day.

“National Girls & Women in Sports Day is meant to celebrate the day that girls were able to compete in organized sports,” said women’s soccer junior Christina Fluman. “At Stony Brook, our NGWSD clinic is a great way to spread the message and connect with the community as student-athletes. We want to connect with the community in any way we can and it is especially fun when we can connect with them through sport.”

“National Girls and Women in Sports Day is one of my favorite events of the year because the student-athletes have so much fun sharing the sports they love with young fans in the community and the kids leave the clinic with big smiles on their faces,” said Stony Brook Coordinator of Life Skills Greta Strenger. “It’s a great way for our student-athletes to connect with the local community around an important celebration. Christina Fluman and the NGWSD Planning Committee did a great job putting the clinic together.”

National Girls & Women in Sports Day, which began in 1987, is celebrated annually across all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies and other celebratory activities. NGWSD is organized by members of the National Girls & Women in Sports Day Coalition. For more information, visit ngwsd.org.
